English translation of La ilaha illa Anta Subhanaka inni kuntu minzaalimeen.

“There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”

This ayah is divided into three major parts according to its meaning.

La ilaha illa Anta: There is no deity except You( O Allah). There is no one that mighty, that much powerful like you. No one has access to see you or tell you anything. No one will ever be able to stand against you. You are the only creator of the universe. There is no one to hear me except you.

  • Subhanaka: Exalted are You.  you are noble. You are mighty. You are perfect. You are the greatest. You are the king of all the kingdoms.
  • Inni Kuntu Minaz Zalimin: Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers. I am the one who did wrong with myself. I acknowledged that I was at fault and I ask you for forgiveness.

So this small and beautiful Ayat is the sea of meanings. The three parts are different but interconnected with each other. In the first part, we say that no one can help us except Allah.

In the second part, we praise Allah’s perfection and His greatness.

In the third part, we accept and acknowledge our mistakes and ask Allah for forgiveness.

This ayah or Dua is very dear to Allah. If someone supplicates this with heart, Allah accepts his repentance. Along with other duas for Umrah, the pilgrims read this dua while performing Umrah.

This is the best way of repentance and asking for forgiveness from Almighty Allah.

Story of Prophet Yunus and the Power of Ayat e Karima

The prophet Yunus was there in the city of  Nineveh to teach people the way of Hidaya. But the people of Nineveh didn’t listen to him and his teaching.  He got so upset and furious that he left the city with anger without asking the Almighty Allah. He hoped to find another city where he could preach Islam peacefully and people would accept his teachings openly.

The Quran mentioned this story:

And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, “There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”

His shipmates threw him off from the ship. Then he was swallowed by a giant fish. The darkness was so frightening that he soon realized he was at fault.  He accepted his fault by saying he was one the of wrongdoers when he left the city like that.

After this Dua, Allah helped the prophet and saved him.
